"A View Through the Pince-Nez", as in all matters of Looking Glass Land, reveals a checkerboard pattern,
in keeping with the theme of chess, as a metaphor for "the game of life". Alice has encountered both the disheveled
White Queen and the imperious Red Queen, and observes that life is simply a worldview of the entire globe as a
game--a game of chess. The pince-nez is opened to a curious angle, in order that it reflect in the manner of a looking glass.
The view? A checkerboard, of course!
